I’ve
been making things out of clay for 40 years.
Clay is one of the most impressionable of art materials and so, working
with clay requires collaboration with the clay:
variations in pressure, in gesture, in concentration are reflected in
the
finished pot.
For
over 40 years, as my skills and aesthetic evolved, I have remained committed to
making beautiful affordable pots for people to use in their homes every day.
With
my sculpture I also work in series, returning again and again to the themes
that interest me: house/home, shrine, boxes, hidden spaces, multiples, personal
narrative and journey.
I
move between these two ways of forming clay: wheel work and
handbuilding/sculpture. I find that they
inform each other and encourage a fresh eye for each body of work.
Making
art in collaboration with other artists also requires attention, responsiveness,
patience and trust. This project has
been an opportunity to work with materials that I am less familiar with and to
welcome and enjoy the unexpected results of working with artists who are
practicing these same skills.
